Overview

The Poetry Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in Chicago, Illinois, established in 2003 to promote poetry and support poets. It evolved from the Modern Poetry Association, which was founded in 1941 to support the publication of *Poetry* magazine, the oldest monthly devoted to verse in the English-speaking world.

The Foundation's mission is to amplify poetry and celebrate poets by creating spaces for everyone to experience and share poetry. It publishes *Poetry* magazine, which features contemporary poetry and prose from global contributors, and maintains a digital archive of over 1,200 issues. The Foundation also organizes events, readings, and exhibitions to engage the public with poetry. Additionally, it administers grants and prestigious awards, such as the Ruth Lilly Prize and Lilly Fellowships, to support the literary community. Its Chicago building includes a public garden, a library with 30,000 volumes, and an exhibition gallery, serving as a cultural hub for poetry enthusiasts.
