Overview
Pathways Alliance is a consortium formed on June 15, 2022, consisting of six major oil sands producers in Canada: Canadian Natural Resources, Cenovus Energy, Imperial Oil, MEG Energy, Suncor Energy, and ConocoPhillips Canada. Together, these companies account for approximately 95% of the country's oil sands production. The alliance aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from oil sands operations by 2050, aligning with Canada's climate commitments.
The Pathways Alliance focuses on advancing environmental innovation, particularly through carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. Its flagship initiative is a proposed $16.5 billion carbon capture and storage network in northern Alberta, designed to transport and permanently store CO2 emissions from multiple oil sands facilities. The alliance also integrates the Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA), enhancing its capacity for environmental research and development. Through collaboration, Pathways Alliance seeks to sustain the economic contributions of the oil sands industry while addressing environmental concerns.
