Marinus Link is an infrastructure project focused on creating an undersea and underground electricity and data interconnector between North West Tasmania and the Latrobe Valley in Victoria, Australia. The project aims to enhance the connection between Tasmania and the National Electricity Market (NEM), allowing for the efficient flow of clean energy in both directions.
Marinus Link Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of TasNetworks, is responsible for advancing this project. It will utilize high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology to connect the two regions with approximately 345 km of cables, including 255 km undersea and 90 km underground. The project is designed to initially support a capacity of 750 MW, enough to power around 1.5 million homes. Additionally, it will significantly boost internet capacity through fibre optic cables, improving telecommunications alongside electricity transmission. With construction set to begin in 2026, Marinus Link is recognized as a key initiative for Australia’s renewable energy future, contributing to climate goals and enhancing grid stability.
