United Way of the Plains

United Way of the Plains is a nonprofit organization based in south-central Kansas, founded in 1922. As a local chapter of United Way Worldwide, it focuses on enhancing community well-being through health, education, financial stability, and basic needs. The organization mobilizes resources and unites stakeholders to create a lasting social impact.

The organization offers various services, including grantmaking to local nonprofits, a 211 information and referral helpline, and programs like Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to promote early childhood literacy. It also runs the Give Items of Value Program, which collects and distributes donated items to area nonprofits, and provides free tax filing services to support financial stability. The Promise of the Plains initiative invests in nonprofits serving BIPOC communities, emphasizing health, education, and financial stability. Additionally, the Dwane L. Wallace Youth Venture Grant engages local high school students in community grantmaking.

United Way of the Plains plays a vital role in supporting vulnerable populations in the region, impacting over 1 million instances of assistance in 2024.
