Overview

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is a nonprofit organization established in 1944 to support minority students, particularly African Americans, in achieving college success. Its mission focuses on increasing college graduation rates among underrepresented students by providing scholarships and strengthening historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). UNCF envisions a nation where all individuals have equal access to higher education.

UNCF has awarded hundreds of millions of dollars in scholarships, helping over 500,000 students earn their degrees. The organization supports 37 member HBCUs by providing resources to enhance student outcomes. It also advocates for K-12 education and federal college aid programs. Notable initiatives include The Fellowship Initiative, which offers support to young men of color, and the Campaign for Emergency Student Aid, which provides funds to final-year students at member institutions. UNCF is recognized for its impactful motto, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste,” and has a rich history of fundraising efforts to empower minority students and strengthen educational opportunities across the United States.
