Professor Rachel Gesami holds a PhD in Economics from The University of
Nairobi, Kenya, a Masters Degree in Economics and Policy from the University
of Leeds, UK, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and Sociology from
the University of Botswana and Swaziland. She is a successful scholar,
researcher and an international development economist. Her passion is to
support education for development and poverty eradication in Africa. Currently,
she is Professor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Affairs and Research in
one of the most prestigious universities in Africa, namely The Catholic University
of East Africa (CUEA). She is also the Chairperson, Board of Trustees and
Management for CUEA. She has also held other educational positions, including
Chairperson of Nelson Mandela Centre for African Studies, Associate Professor
of Economics, Faculty Associate at the Centre for Economic Studies and
Planning at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India; She was also the
Dean, School of Business and Economics at the Kenya Methodist University. As
a development economist, Prof. Gesami has served in various capacities within
the Kenya Government. She was the Secretary, Policy Co-ordination, Office of
the Prime Minister; Director, Vision 2030 in the Office of the Prime Minister, and
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Cooperative Development. Internationally,
Prof. Gesami worked as the Senior Advisor, Anglophone Africa at the
International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington DC, where she provided
technical advice to Member Countries on Economic Policy, Macroeconomic,
Financial and Structural issues.
