Containers for Change

Containers for Change QLD, operated by Container Exchange (COEX), is a not-for-profit organization managing Queensland’s container refund scheme. This initiative encourages recycling by offering a 10-cent refund for eligible drink containers returned at over 230 designated refund points throughout the state. The scheme aims to reduce litter, increase recycling rates, and support community groups and social enterprises.

COEX, appointed by the Queensland Government, ensures the efficient operation of the scheme. Individuals can return eligible containers made of materials like aluminium, glass, and plastic, and receive refunds in cash, bank transfers, or donations to registered charities and community groups. The returned containers are sorted and processed, contributing to a circular economy by transforming materials into new products.

Since its launch in November 2018, the scheme has successfully facilitated the return of over 10 billion containers, showcasing its positive impact on the environment and local communities.
