It operates as the working name of Bridge House Estates, a registered charity governed by the City of London Corporation. The foundation owns and manages five major Thames bridges in London: Tower Bridge, London Bridge, Southwark Bridge, Millennium Bridge, and Blackfriars Bridge.

As London’s largest independent charity funder, City Bridge Foundation has awarded over £840 million in grants since 1995 to address inequality and injustice in the city. It distributes around £30 million annually and has committed an additional £200 million over five years to support the charitable sector. The foundation's endowment, valued at approximately £1.6 billion, primarily supports bridge maintenance and charitable grant-making.

In 2023, City Bridge Foundation streamlined its operations by unifying its bridge management and charity funding teams. It also launched a new ten-year funding policy called *Standing with Londoners* to enhance support for communities in London. The foundation administers various philanthropic initiatives, providing both financial and non-financial support to enhance community development across Greater London.
